Our director Dr Julie Nightingale is delighted to report that we have made a significant investment to upgrade facilities for teaching and research. These include CR-DR upgrade in our 2 x-ray rooms in the Sue Hall Imaging facility (SHIF), and a range of phantoms including paediatric and lung phantoms.

We have also purchased Resus mannequins, Medaphor ultrasound simulation equipment and a broadcast-quality high specification video camera.  Amongst a range of activities we intend to use the video camera to   provide formative feedback to students via video of their practice when working in our imaging facility.  Julie said, “this investment demonstrates the commitment of the University of Salford in maintaining our position at the cutting edge of undergraduate postgraduate teaching and research, in recognition of the excellent outputs from our directorate”.  Julie would especially like to thank Prof Peter Hogg, Andrew England and Andrew Tootell for their huge efforts in organising the purchasing within a short timeframe.

The Medaphor scan trainer uses haptic feedback devices to enable the development of scanning orientation and image acquisition skills, using dynamic examination data from real patients. This equipment will provide formative training for sonography students and allow them to ‘hit the ground running’ in the clinical environment , so that they can make the very best use of the clinical experience and hopefully, accelerate the practical learning process. A You Tube introductory video on this equipment is available at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lR0aCw_Ep60#t=27
